Vmware Fusion 7 - in OSx 10.9 guest iTunes crashes every time after vmware tool is installed

Hello Community,

i'm having a problem with vmware tools.  Yesterday i did the upgrade from Fusion 6 to 7 Pro.

I have been installed Mavericks like as virtual machine.  My system (iMac Late2013) has Mavericks installed.

With vmware tools iTunes crash every time it's launched.

Without vmware tools iTunes works well.... but performance is very low (i cannot use shared folders etc)

Before upgrade to vmware fusion 7, I had fusion 6 and all works properly (i mean iTunes with vmware tools)

I use this machine with audio application and it's important for me to use iTunes inside the virtual machine.

Are there any "tricks" to solve this issue?

thanks

Nice description.  I was just sitting here steaming mad at how long everything takes and decided to do a Google search of "why does the vsphere web interface suck so badly?" and this thread popped up.  LOL.

Anyway, just FYI, we had a POC of Red Hat CloudForms, which is a kind of universal virtualization management console for different virtual environments.  It can connect to AWS, OpenStack, vSphere, and several others and control them via a common interface with automated workflows.  When we hooked it into our vSphere, it was able to manage everything much faster and more smoothly than VMware's own web client!

So, even a 3rd party management console uses vCenter's APIs more efficiently than whoever wrote the VMware web interface.  That tells me that it needs a LOT of optimization...

Glad to have helped!  We spent a fair while on this but the solution literally took seconds, hopefully this saves others from having to go through that

Cost of upgrading to Fusion 7 on UK site is the same as buying new copy

Hi,

I've noticed that the upgrade to Fusion 7 on the UK site costs £49.94.

This is the same price as buying a new copy as far as I can see.

I thought the upgrade price was going to be lower than the new price, or am I missing something?

Thanks, Paul

It's OEM rather than the upgrade package and price, but Best Buy is showing it as currently for sale. But what is ending is "Mainstream Support," including adding features. Very soon, only security updates will be provided, like the category Lion and Mountain Lion are currently in.

BTW, I just tried running the unofficial "SP4" update in XPMode in Win 7 Pro, running as a VM in Fusion 7 installed in Yosemite DP 7, and it was painfully slow compared to Fusion 6.0.4 running in Mountain Lion, though it sped up some once the SP4 install completed. I think I'll stay with Fusion 6 for a while (the Technology Previews seemed to be snappier than the release ).

So what am I missing here? What's XP giving people that I don't see?

I think you answered your own question.

For people who can't upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 (software and/or hardware incompatibility) or don't want to because they don't want to relearn how to use an OS (one reason why Windows 8's acceptance rate is so abysmal), or because such an upgrade isn't simple like upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, but who are still concerned about their computer's security, unofficial SP4 might be a solution, which was the reason for my post. Have you asked your parents why they don't upgrade? Are they as computer-savvy as you and able to undertake the upgrade process and then the steep relearning curve?

Anyone who can upgrade from XP should, especially while Win 7 is still available, but for those who can't or don't want to, SP4 might be a solution. Security is an issue, which SP4 may offer a solution to, since Microsoft is still updating XP, just not on PC's and SP4 accesses those security updates. But there's also what I noticed updating XPMode running within Windows 7 Pro in Fusion: performance was a lot more responsive after the update, suggesting that Microsoft might have been doing more with its final system updates than just building in EOL warnings.

I like legends, which is why I have VM's from Windows 95 to 8.1 (8.1 is a legend in its own way), but to the extent I need to actually do something in Windows, it's on a Win 7 Pro VM, not XP.

This virtual disk has been copied form an ESXi host without converting it. The possible option I can think of are:

  1. Add a new virtual disk to the VM, and then replace the new virtual disk's file name in the configuration (.vmx) file with the existing .vmdk descriptor file name. Make sure VMware Workstation or at least the VM's tab is closed when editing the .vmx file, so it will be re-read from VMware Workstation.
  2. Use the vmware-vdiskmanager command line tool to convert the virtual disk to a VMware Workstation format.
  3. Edit the descriptor file as shown below (most likely unsupported, so make sure you have a backup of all the .vmdk files)

# Disk DescriptorFile

version=1

encoding="UTF-8" --> encoding="windows-1252"

CID=8a43c1b1

parentCID=ffffffff

isNativeSnapshot="no"

createType="vmfs"--> createType="monolithicFlat"

# Extent description

RW 1468006400 VMFS "%OURSERVER%flat.vmdk" --> RW 1468006400 FLAT "%OURSERVER%-flat.vmdk" 0

# The Disk Data Base

#DDB

ddb.adapterType = "lsilogic"

ddb.geometry.cylinders = "91379"

ddb.geometry.heads = "255"

ddb.geometry.sectors = "63"

ddb.longContentID = "fab1ab5a6dcc52db8dc07b4b8a43c1b1"

ddb.uuid = "60 00 C2 97 ff 55 b6 26-c9 76 e3 d2 7a 2d e5 0b"

ddb.virtualHWVersion = "8"

Can't install VMtools. I get a Microsoft DLL error. Converting from Parallels 6

I'm new to Fusion and not a sophisticated Windows user so be warned.

I'm attempting to take a Parallels 6 VM image and import it into Fusion 7.

The import SEEMS to work okay, takes a while even running from an SSD on a 17" MBPro. But when the VM starts, and after it does its driver loading thing, and is restarted, the screen size is left at VGA and there's no sound.

So I use the menu to invoke the Load VMtools which fails about 90% of the way through with a Microsoft DLL error.

I don't have a clue about how to proceed and would like advice.

Thank you!

I began to have this issue when I installed 5.5.  I found it to be because I specified both -Domain and -DomainCredentials.  Remove the -Domain and ensure -DomainCredentials contains the domain information (Domain\User when creating the credentials).

Hey Sam,

Saw no one had answered, so wanted to see if I could help.

For testing, your developers can use spoon.net/browsers, which will let them run any version of IE and Firefox side-by-side. I unfortunately can't help with your ThinApp issue :-/, but you may want to take a look at Spoon Studio, which a lot of people consider a "stronger version" of ThinApp. Could definitely help you out then! Email colin@spoon.net if you have any questions about Spoon v. ThinApp, or more info can be found here.

Cheers!

Re: Removing pNIC from vDS

Alright, so I went and tested this. With an active SSH session to one host displaying esxtop (network) I removed one (of 3) NIC from the vDS. Instantaneously the VM's which were on this NIC were moved to another one. I had a continuous ping running to these VM's prior to making the change and not even one ICMP request timed out (so if the connection did drop it was for less than 1 second). The physical switch (a Cisco in this case) also updated it's CAM table instantly, although as Richardson pointed out, that might depend on the hardware/network configuration.

Thanks for all your responses.

I took the 3rd step. I edited the file. I do not want to touch ESXi with regard to this vmdk anymore, I had too many problems with it.

With regard to converting it, that could take hours, I am guessing. If I have to convert it, I will. But if I can just mount it by changing the config, I would rather do that.

I am just going to copy the 200GB out of it anyway. I don't need proper permissions or anything.

It mounted, with vmware-mount. I have it assigned to the Y drive. It looks like I'm not given permission to it. It says Access denied. There was a .lck folder created in the parent folder.

I believe there is probably a way to simply give permission, but I will not change it until you let me know.

EDIT: I went ahead an unmounted it, and tried mounting with the /u:user /s:password for the original ESXi host, as I didn't have permission. It is asking for a VM specification.

vSphere Documentation Center

I am reading documentation and cannot find a switch for that.

EDIT: I conquered my fear, but chose another VM to mount it on. And I see the files. Thanks.

Hi James,

Thanks for providing the support bundle and details.

Looking at the support bundle, looks like the SSD you are trying to use is getting into a APD (all paths to device lost)/error condition. The path for the device is vmhba33:C0:T0:L0 (from the vmkernel logs) and vmhba33  is a ACHI controller (from esxcfg info output). While trying to add the device to the vsan diskgroup, the IOs are failing to that device and seems to be getting into error/permanent device loss scenario. Please see some of the messages from the vmkernel.log in this regard.. (there are lots just cut n pasted only some few relevant messages)

The AHCI controller and the SSD doesn't seem to be on the HCL as well. It is best if we use the contoller/devices from the vsan HCL list (VMware Compatibility Guide: vsan)

Consolidating vCenters

$

Hi all.  We have 9 vCenters (5.1 U1, all Windows/no appliances), spanning several geographical locations over relatively high speed WAN links. It was previously 6 vCenters at 4.1 back in 2010, then we upgraded all to 5.1 and have added 3 since.

2 of these 9 vCenters are SRM-enabled.  The other 7 are in linked-mode.  We have a single SSO server (centralized) for the 7 in linked-mode, and the 2 SRM servers are 'isolated' and have their own SSO's.  Together, these 9 vCenters manage 'only' about 75 hosts and 750 vm's combined.

Having just come from VMworld, one session on vCenter discussed SSO's, the Inventory service, web client, deployment scenarios and everything else and as the slide deck went on, and it made me think, "Hmmm... why DO we have so many vCenters???

In planning for vSphere 6, why not just consolidate the 7 non-SRM vCenters into a SINGLE vCenter?  That single vCenter could run within the SRM cluster in our primary site, and be recoverable in the SRM cluster in the recovery site.

What are some of the pitfalls of just having a single vCenter for the majority of our virtual datacenters and hosts?  vMotion and svMotion wouldn't suffer since all such operations would still only occur within those virtual datacenters (which happen to be located in different geographical regions).  We have high speed links (nothing slower than gigabit except for our London vCenters).  Authentication might be a little bit slow for remote admins outside of the SSO site but we're already used to that.  vCenter<>ESXi host agent communication would be affected since it would no longer be at LAN speed but again our WAN links are pretty fast overall.  We don't have any 'political' barriers where administration and security and so on might necessitate such administrative boundaries.

I'm just trying to think of any gotchas before planning on a pre-vSphere 6 consolidation of vCenters.  Thanks for any feedback.

Wait a second, I may have misunderstood your issue.  Just to clarify. Do you use VMware Workstation to connect to an ESXi host and manage a VM on the ESXi host, or did you copy this virtual to your local PC in order to use it with a VMware Workstation VM on your PC?

I use VMware Workstation to manage my ESXi host.

Originally the VMDK was mounted on a NFS share thru ESXi, shared as a HDD to the server as a "local hdd" backup.

I think it had some issues when I removed it, as the machine was running.

Changing the config file as you suggested allowed me to add  the hardrive to one of the ESXi guests it looks like.

Originally I was not able to do that, it would give the error I gave above.

I'm not sure if the other particular guest I chose was vmx-08 or not. I am not sure how to check that. I did try to find that out.

But I would venture to guess that when we specified FLAT, that it made it work for some reason. If you have any suggestions as to reading more about the structure of VMDK I would be highly appreciative.

Thanks for your help, now my issue is resolved, based on that configuration file change.

Now we deployed the vcloud in the same environment. and the initial setup is going on.

The issue is All the depart ment need their virtual machine in the vcloud now. i know how to import the machines from vsphere but still i want is there any recommended or easy way to do this for all those vms.

And what people use normally to do so?

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.
